Make Your Own Ugly Sweaters for Christmas

Why ugly sweaters? Well most of us don’t usually wear red and green sweaters with silly pictures on them but at Christmas, anything goes. There are loads of ugly sweaters for Christmas available in the shops and online but if you want to only temporarily convert a normal sweater, you can make the changes yourself or permanently change a cheap old sweater, here’s what to do.

Your Theme

There are plenty of Christmas themes to choose from; Father Christmas, reindeer, parcels, snow, Christmas tree and Christmas decorations, to name but a few.

Make the Pieces

First you need to make your basic design; felt is a good material to use but any other will do for an ugly sweater.

Cut out your tree, Father Christmas, reindeer (or just the ears) or whatever you want and fix it to your jumper; you can sew it on or pin it on (to be able to remove it easily) or stick it on but if you’re sticking it, you need to make sure that the glue doesn’t go through to the back of the sweater or you won’t be able to put it on. It’s up to you whether you do this before or after you add the extra touches and decorations.

Decorations

Felt in a different colour is good for noses, eyes etc. Cotton wool is great for Father Chrismas’ beard or snow effects. Tinsel, ribbon and small baubles can be sewn on to decorate a Christmas tree. Just don’t add anything too heavy or it will pull the sweater out of shape.

Knit Your Own

If you like to knit then an ugly Christmas sweater project will keep you occupied for the winter months up to December. If you’re really adept then you can design your own pattern but if your knitting skills aren’t up to that, there are plenty of patterns available.

There’s something quite appealing about a home-made ugly Christmas sweater but if you don’t have the time or the ideas to make your own, just buy one for a bit of Christmas fun.
